How to fix errors on your motor vehicle record
An error on a motor vehicle record is an error in the state file the report was drawn from. Insurers, employers, and Driver Leaderboard can show the line. They cannot erase it. The fix starts by getting a current copy, matching it to the court papers, and asking the state that posted the entry to correct the file. After the state updates the file, order a new report.
Get the report and the court paper
Order your own motor vehicle record from the state that issued the license, using the portal on that state's page. Write down each line you dispute: the date, the description, and the license action if there is one. Then get the disposition from the court that handled the case. You are looking for a dismissal, a reduced charge, a case that belonged to someone else, or a clearance that never reached the licensing agency.
Common mismatches are a similar name, a ticket paid in a diversion the state still posted as a conviction, a suspension that was lifted but still shows as open, and the same event printed twice. A violation you simply dislike is not an error. The state can keep a real conviction for as long as its retention rule says.
Send the correction to the state that posted it
Follow the dispute instructions on that DMV or licensing site. Many states want a certified disposition and a short statement of what is wrong. Mail or upload it the way they describe. A phone call rarely replaces the document. If the license on the report is from a prior state, that prior state is the one that has to fix its own file. The new state cannot always edit history it only received as a transfer.
Keep copies. Correction times vary, and this page does not invent a number of days. When the agency says the file is updated, order a fresh motor vehicle record and read the line again. If an employer or insurer used the old report, ask them to order a new one. Their old PDF will not change by itself.
What a private score cannot fix
If we retrieved a report that contains a bad line, deleting your data here removes our copy and the educational score we calculated from it. It does not amend the state file, and it does not amend the copy an insurer already stored. The driver score will keep reflecting a bad entry until the report it was calculated from is replaced. Fix the record first. The score is only a summary of whatever the record says.
Frequently asked questions
Can Driver Leaderboard delete a violation from my MVR?
No. We can delete the copy we stored and the educational score calculated from it. The state that posted the entry is the only place that can correct the motor vehicle record.
What documents should I gather?
A current report, the court disposition for the case you dispute, and any reinstatement or clearance letter. Send them the way your state portal describes.
The ticket is real. Can I remove it early?
A real conviction stays for the period that state keeps it. This guide is for lines that are wrong, duplicated, or out of date, not for erasing accurate history.

Read the record first
The motor vehicle record is the document. A driver score, when you have one, is only an educational summary of that record.
