How to get your motor vehicle record

You get a motor vehicle record from the state that issued the license, or from an organization that is allowed to order the report for a permitted purpose. The report is a copy of the driving record that state already keeps. A private company cannot add convictions the state did not post, and an educational driver score is not a substitute for the report.

Order your own copy

Most states let you request your record online, by mail, or at a licensing office. You will need the license number and whatever identity the state asks for. The fee, if there is one, is set by that state. This page does not list prices, because they differ and they change. The state page links the official portal so you can read the current instructions there.

Ask whether you need a certified copy. A certified record carries the state's seal and is the version courts and some employers require. An on-screen or uncertified copy is often enough when you only want to read what is posted before someone else orders it. The portal will say which one you are buying.

If you have lived in more than one state

Each state keeps the record for the license it issued. Moving and surrendering a license does not always merge the old history into the new state's file. If you need the full picture, order the record from each state that licensed you during the years you care about. Our state index is the directory of those portals. It does not replace the request itself.

When an employer or insurer orders it

A hiring or insurance order uses a permitted channel and your authorization. That copy can be shorter than the copy you would pull for yourself, because the order asks for a window. You can still request your own report and compare the lines. If something on their copy looks wrong, the correction is made by the state that posted the entry, not by the company that ordered the printout.

What checking it here does

Creating an account is how you ask Driver Leaderboard to retrieve the motor vehicle record available through our check. After that record is back, we can show an educational driver score calculated from the same entries. The score is secondary. It is not the official certified copy, it is not a DMV printout, and it does not tell an insurer what to charge. If you need the sealed state document, order that from the portal on your state page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order someone else's motor vehicle record?

Usually only with that person's permission or another purpose the state and federal privacy rules allow, such as a permitted employment or insurance order. Your own record is the one you can always request.

Is the driver score the same as getting the MVR?

No. The motor vehicle record is the report. The driver score is an educational summary calculated afterward from entries on that report.

How long does a state request take?

It depends on the state and on whether the request is electronic, mailed, or in person. The official portal is the source for the current timing. We do not publish a national turnaround.

Read the record first

The motor vehicle record is the document. A driver score, when you have one, is only an educational summary of that record.
